To Interim or not to Interim, that is the question?!

Posted on 13th August 2018

As a mother of two, with a need to balance my professional life and motherhood, and have success in both, it was very important for me to have flexible working options. Thankfully Meeta Sahni, our CEO and mother of three (including twins!), offered me the flexibility I desired, and I jumped at the opportunity to join The Maine Group family. Now over two years in to launching Maine Charity, we’re going from strength to strength in business and more importantly I have balance between being a business woman and a mother. Having experience here, I am happy to see that more and more of our clients are taking an agile approach to staffing and not missing out on amazing talent.

We have seen a significant increase in the number of part time roles and job share opportunities, but more interestingly a substantial increase in the number of candidates opting to become professional interim consultants.

In just the last week alone, I have met with more than 10 senior level consultants who specialise in fundraising, communications, and HR, all opting to move away from their Director level positions to explore what value they can bring to the sector in a more consultative fashion. Some are still available full time, others part time, some for short contracts, and others happy to look longer term. Yet, the common theme with all is flexible working, creating a positive work life balance and adding value to the sector.

Is interim right for your organisation?

Many of my clients will look at bringing an interim into their organisation to cover maternity leave or absence, to manage a capital campaign, to offer consultation and expertise, to manage organisational changes/development, or to develop an organisational strategy.

The benefits of employing an interim are often apparent from the outset as an interim can often have more experience than the role requires, a broad knowledge base gained from a mixture of organisations in the sector and, most importantly, offer objectivity.  They have often worked at Senior Leadership level and worked closely with Trustees.

We do however understand that short-term help as a solution to cover projects or permanent recruitment periods will usually be met with concerns over cost and quality, but we like to remind our clients of the financial impact of not having relevant cover and the strain it places on your current workforce.

Looking forward, the need for charity support is unfortunately going to grow and with it, the need for specialist talent. As the market becomes more candidate led, employers are already finding it difficult to find and attract high calibre candidates.

We work in partnership with our clients, becoming an extension of their world and working with them to really understand their needs and how interim support can help them.

I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you about your recruitment needs or assist you in your search for interim work as a consultant.
