Media Volunteer - Fairtrade Foundation

This voluntary position could be an exciting and challenging first role for someone looking to move into public relations. The position will offer a fantastic opportunity to learn how the media works and allow you to gain experience of working in a busy press office.

The Fairtrade Foundation is a rapidly growing organisation which licenses the consumer label the FAIRTRADE Mark in the UK on products that meet international standards of Fairtrade. Our unique independent guarantee is helping producers in the South and consumers in the North to challenge conventional trading systems that condemn millions to poverty and hardship.

This voluntary position could be an exciting and challenging first role for someone looking to move into public relations. The position will offer a fantastic opportunity to learn how the media works and allow you to gain experience of working in a busy press office.

Commitment: Ideally we would like to have a volunteer for 2-3 days per week for at least three months, with the intention of looking ahead to support Fairtrade’s 25th birthday in October.

This arrangement is not intended to be legally binding or to create a contract.

Role description:
As a Media Volunteer you will be responsible for a wide range of administrative and general office duties which will make this opportunity both interesting and varied, as well as supporting on specific projects, like the 25th celebration.

Tasks include:

Monitoring the daily news
Helping compile media coverage and keep filing system up to date
Helping to prepare monthly media evaluations
Support with press events
Helping with the writing up of case studies, blogs & press releases
Helping with research media outlets and journalists as well as interview slots
Helping with influencer marketing
Sending press photographs, product samples etc to journalists
General press office support
Handling other administrative tasks as necessary
Skills required:

Excellent writing skills
Excellent telephone manner
Excellent organisational skills
Excellent communication skills
Good computer skills (although training will be given on any media management systems)

What are the hours?

Flexible, but normally 10.30am-5.00pm Monday to Friday

Location

Unless otherwise stated, positions are based at the Fairtrade Foundation's offices: 5.7 The Loom, 14 Gower's Walk, London, E1 8PY

Do I get expenses?

We refund travel expenses (maximum £15 per day, preferably off peak) on production of a receipt or ticket and actual expenses incurred for lunch to the value of £5 on production of receipts, if volunteering for more than four hours a day or over the lunch period.

We regret that we are unable to assist non-UK residents who are planning to volunteer during a short stay in the UK with visa applications, finding accommodation etc.
